Moving to Maine

Remember the days when neighbors were also friends and your friends ran the local shops and businesses? Remember a place where a visit to the grocery store or post office ended up as a social event? Here where the mountains meet the sea, it’s even better than you remember.

Come home to the Jewel of the Maine Coast®, where our villages and towns are welcoming and safe. Business Week cited this as one of the top 11 places in the country to retire, but our population also represents a vibrant mix of age groups, including young families.

Area schools—public and private—have benefited from recent construction and modernization. Camden Hills Regional High School serves about 660 students from five towns: Appleton, Camden, Hope, Lincolnville, and Rockport. Oceanside High School, serving Rockland, Owls Head, Thomaston, and the St. George Peninsula, was created in 2011 and represents a truly regional approach to education.

Our public libraries boast high usage and attract residents and visitors to talks, films, book clubs, and other events throughout the year.

Economic development is a top priority in the Camden-Rockland Region. From the days when shipping was king to the mid-19th-century heyday of wool mills and other manufacturing, our region keeps evolving to meet modern needs and concerns. Vibrant downtowns and exciting regional initiatives pair with an unemployment rate consistently below the national average. We have a varied and educated workforce as well as an economic climate and resources that encourage entrepreneurs and promote sustainable, year-round jobs. The Chamber partners with community and economic development offices in the towns we serve. You can find more information on our Resources Page. If you are interested in bringing or starting a business here, contact the Chamber by email or phone: 207-596-0376. We are ready to assist you in any way.

One of our core values in Midcoast Maine is protecting our quality of life through quality of place. To that end, it’s easy to find “green” businesses here. Protecting wildlife habitats, promoting recycling and nontoxic lawn chemicals, and dedicated bicycle and pedestrian pathways—they’re all part of our environmentally-friendly goals.

A healthy population is important, too, and our hospitals and care facilities are among the state’s best.

In a setting like ours, recreation opportunities abound. You can golf by the sea, ski at our community alpine area, and sail or row practically from your front door. There are also excellent museums, year-round concerts and plays, a great variety of places to dine, classes in everything from photography to boatbuilding, and even acclaimed conferences on world affairs and technology.

Our strong sense of community provides many ways to take part: as volunteers in service clubs and nonprofit organizations or in town government, the fire department, and local politics. Places of worship in the Camden-Rockland Region represent many faiths and sects.

Your choice of homes includes in-town apartments, well-priced houses (new or vintage), maintenance-free condominiums, and fine retirement communities. And the four-season living is easy—even in winter, which is moderated by our proximity to the ocean.

So come live, invest, work, and play in Appleton, Camden, Cushing, Friendship, Glen Cove, Hope, Lincolnville, Owls Head, Port Clyde, Rockland, Rockport, South Thomaston, Spruce Head, St. George, Tenants Harbor, Thomaston, Union, Waldoboro, and Warren and the islands of Islesboro, Matinicus, Monhegan, North Haven, and Vinalhaven, where you can gain the quality of life you crave without losing the services and amenities you expect.
