News from Rockland Maine Street, Inc.

1. Shop Second Saturday (s2s) -
s2s is a statewide promotion sponsored by the Retail Association of Maine. It's easy to sign up, but you must do so as your own business. There is heavy participation in southern and central Maine with this promotion, but not so much here in the Midcoast. I encourage you to register your business and to take advantage of this opportunity to promote and drive business into downtown Rockland and into your door for 2nd Saturday specials.
Check this link, http://shopsecondsaturday.com/ scroll down the page to see what businesses around the state are involved, then go ahead and register. It's that simple. After that, you dictate what your s2s Special will be every month. The more downtown Rockland businesses that participate, the stronger the promotion will be for everyone.

The Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce supports this program, as does Rockland Main Street, Inc.

2. Help Wanted Promotion
This is the time of year when your business may have a need to replace departing seasonal employees or when you're thinking about gearing up for the fast-approaching holiday season. With the stretching of the season, there is plenty of time and lots of customers planning to come to downtown Rockland to eat and shop and browse the galleries and museums.

Rockland Main Street, Inc., can assist you in getting the word out about your job opportunities within your business by posting your vacancies on our RMSI Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rockland-Main-Street/128114453277 which has nearly 4,000 followers. RMSI is offering this for only a limited amount of time, so please respond with your current job openings ASAP.

City of Rockland Addresses Parking Concerns

City of Rockland Addresses Parking Concerns

The City of Rockland is working on several construction projects and a few of them are in the downtown. This is making valuable parking spots scarcer. The City understands this pressure on downtown business owners but our short constructions season is a substantial hurdle itself. Let me offer a few updates for proper planning heading into the event season.

The Thorndike parking lot will be completely available within the week. Final paving for the parking lot will not happen in this construction year due to scarcity of funds but the lot is improved, reformatted, and available shortly.

Construction on Winter Street and Tilson Avenue will continue into the summer but the parking spots being utilized for construction staging will end shortly. These areas will also be available within weeks.

There are no additional construction projects anticipated for this season. Hopefully, we can endure the most inconvenient period of construction and have these spots available again.

The City is currently discussing an arrangement with Boston Financial to make some parking available for regular downtown employees. The City will make that announcement after it develops further. In the meantime, Harbor Park and Buoy Park have parking available for overflow. Please ask your employees to utilize those spots to keep spots available for temporary parking users. For Lighthouse Lovers

For Lighthouse Lovers

Maine has 68 lighthouses, 14 of which are in Knox County. Lighthouses are art, history, and culture, each unique in its design, and each with its own tales of heroic rescues, romantic legends, shipwrecks, and ghosts. Built in the 1800s by some of America’s foremost architects and engineers, lighthouses posed major construction challenges due to the rocky, wave-swept ledges and shifting sands on which they stand. In recent times, automation has left many empty light keeper’s houses prey to neglect. We are fortunate that several of our lighthouses here in the Midcoast have been preserved as museums. Museums in the Midcoast

Midcoast Maine evokes a sense of timelessness. The setting is conducive to pondering the past—and our region offers a variety of museums to put your ponderer on. The following is a list of the museums we have located in our region.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, so please check out Maine's Office of Tourism and Maine's Midcoast (a collaborative of 7 Maine coastal Chambers of Commerce) for more Maine attractions.

Camden Accommodations hosts Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce Volunteers

Barbara Heard, owner of Camden Accommodations welcomed the PBRCC Volunteers to an open house and tour in April.

Barbara educated the volunteers and visitor center staff about what Camden Accommodations does and what she feels sets them apart. "Camden Accommodations is currently celebrating its 21st year as mid-coast Maine's premier vacation rental agency. Our goal is not to represent the most properties, but to represent beautiful properties and to work hard to represent them well. We believe our job is two-fold; to work with property owners toward the successful rental of their homes, and to work with guests. Since 1994 we have built a stellar reputation doing both. "says Heard.
