Posted April 11, 2019

“The Band America Loves,” the McIntyre Orchestra returns to the Camden Opera House just in time for Mother's Day!

In the twentieth century in the United States, each succeeding generation has embraced its own immensely popular, rhythmically strong and rebellious musical forms. At the turn of the century it was Ragtime. In the post World War-l period the country entered the Jazz Age, and Charlestoned its way through the Roaring Twenties Then the country groped for a new beat, and found it in the music of the Big Bands led by Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Hal McIntyre. The sound of the Big Bands still holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Americans. It is a positive and optimistic music and was an inspiration to millions during one of the more difficult periods of American History. It helped guide us through the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war recession. It fulfilled the yearning for a sentimental, romantic escape from the mundane and at the same time was appreciated for its excitement and even as fine art. Join us at the Camden Opera House to relive these moments, and relish in the sounds of the American Big Band Era.

Hal McIntyre was a saxophonist, clarinetist and as a long -time member of the Glenn Miller orchestra. At the suggestion of Miller, McIntyre formed his own group, and the band officially opened at the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, N.Y., in 1941. They played major venues throughout the country, including New York's Commodore Hotel, Hollywood's Palladium Ballroom and Chicago's Sherman Hotel, as well as overseas for American troops during World War II. When McIntyre passed away suddenly in Hollywood, Calif., in the late 1950s, his son, Hal Jr., took over and kept then band going until he also passed away. Now, this world famous orchestra is directed by long time drummer Don Pentleton, and is one of the hottest big band attractions in the business. With a lineage straight to the top of the Big Band headliners, The Hal McIntyre Orchestra takes you on a Sentimental Journey of the American spirit.
