On Saturday, September 28, The Landing Place will be holding training for their new Host Home program which is designed to serve youth in need of emergency shelter due to family conflict, personal challenges, or other difficult life circumstances. Ben Cooke, Shelter Solutions Coordinator, will instruct individuals interested in providing a Host Home on all elements of the program. Training will be held at the TLP youth center on 61 Park Street in Rockland from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
“I am excited The Landing Place is starting a Host Home Program, which will offer housing for youth with local community members. This enables them to remain in their schools and communities where they find support. We are currently looking for families and individuals interested in potentially hosting youth and encouraged already by the early response to our first Host Home training in September.” said Ben Cooke, Shelter Solutions Coordinator at The Landing Place.
Recent reports indicate that from 2014 to 2017 Maine has experience a 30% increase in school students who identify as homeless, rising from 1,934 to 2,515, of whom 1,458 were unaccompanied minors. Currently, Maine only has 96 shelter and transitional living beds specifically for youth. With increasing evidence that childhood trauma is a leading cause of life-long negative health outcomes (both psychological and physical), the focus on youth homelessness is of critical importance.
About The Landing Place
The Landing Place is a comprehensive program of Knox County Homeless Coalition. The youth center on Park Street is a welcoming, non-judgmental, and reliable safe haven where local youth can respectfully engage in activities, spend time with friends, relax, learn new skills, receive compassionate mentorship from trained staff, and access free services, including fun activities, community-based resources, fun and healthy snacks, warm suppers, shower and laundry facilities, computers, clothing, blankets, personal hygiene products, and other basic supplies.
Experienced, compassionate case managers, trained in trauma-informed practices, work intensively with high-risk individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 to determine and prioritize needs, identify personal goals, develop plans of care, and create attainable action plans.
